Strainer and How Does It Work

A strainer is a mechanical filter designed to remove solid particles from liquids or gases flowing through a piping system. Its main function is to protect sensitive equipment such as valves, pumps, meters, and heat exchangers.

A strainer consists of a metal body (commonly Y-type, T-type, or basket type) containing a metal mesh filtering element. The fluid passes through the mesh, which traps debris and contaminants.

Key advantages include:

  • Extended service life of system components

  • Reduced maintenance downtime

  • Improved operational efficiency

Strainers are used extensively in industries such as oil & gas, water treatment, chemical processing, and HVAC.
